If you saw someone who was hungry, in need of clothes and a place to
stay, what would you do? A few years ago, some folks were asked this
very question and they responded by bringing food to those who were
homeless and in need of help. As time went on, they told others about
what they had seen and what they were doing. And in a short time, more
folks began to help and started doing more things like providing
clothes, neighborly conversation and a place to hang out. The Route 1 Day Resource Center was planted as this seed to help meet the needs of those who are homeless in Howard County, and although still in its infancy, it offers great wisdom to both those who serve, and would be served, by its work. It shows that we need to act on the challenges of our communities. It would've been easy for those in the beginning to voice there concerns to others in hopes of seeing some action but they chose to do something about them. When we see a need, we need to do something about it. Many times, we're actually the solutions to the problems we see, and all it takes is for us to be open to what needs to be done. Most importantly, it shows that homelessness isn't something that happens to "those people" and is something that affects us all. Whether we see each other or not we all live in community together. You could even say we're part of a greater family. And that means responsibilities. When one of us hurts we need to be there for them. Struggle is something that we all go through, but never alone. Seeds grow by that provision and we must open ourselves up to action if we're ever to grow the seeds of need.
